On May 1, Professor Carlton F.W. Larson gave the keynote lecture at “The Impact and Heritage of Treason” conference at St. Antony’s College at Oxford University.

Larson’s talk was titled “Treason in Modern America.”

On April 29, Professor Darien Shanske spoke before the Pennsylvania House Finance Committee in favor of a bill that would tax revenue derived from digital advertising platforms.

Professor Darien Shanske  spoke to Bloomberg Tax  for a May 1 story on the potential influence of a California court ruling that shrinks Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp.’s franchise tax liability.

Professor Darien Shanske spoke to the San Francisco Business Times for an April 24 story on empty downtown San Francisco office buildings that sold for far less than their previous value but have been reassessed at a much higher taxable value.

An April 28 Sacramento Bee story quoted Professor Darien Shanske regarding a California bill aiming to draw billions more in taxes from multinational corporations.

Shanske spoke to lawmakers about the bill, the Bee reported, telling them that “California will only ever tax the portion of sales into California.”

Professor Shayak Sarkar presented an article he co-authored with Professor Leticia Saucedo at UC Berkeley School of Law’s April 6 Work Law Colloquium.

The article, “Dignity Without Unions” (forthcoming, Georgia Law Review), collects new empirical evidence from in-depth surveys to understand how domestic workers negotiate for better workplaces and perceive collective bargaining and unions.

On April 20, Professor Shayak Sarkar presented his 2024 California Law Review article “Internal Revenue’s External Borders” at the NYU Tax Policy Seminar.

Focused on the Internal Revenue Service’s growing role in immigration enforcement, the article has been cited by parties in ongoing litigation against the IRS, including in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Professor Raquel Aldana appeared on Beyond Borders: The Immigration Evaluation Podcast to talk about “Credibility, Trauma Science, and What the Law Really Needs from Mental Health Professionals.” Aldana is an expert on the intersection of immigration law, trauma science, and credibility adjudication. The podcast highlighted research she and her co-authors recently published in the American Journal of Science and Medicine.

Loyola Law School Professor Kaiponanea Matsumura wrote a positive review in Jotwell of Professor Nila Bala’s forthcoming Yale Law Journal article, “Guilt by Parenthood.”
