Non-Circulating Books

Many books are "NON-CIRCULATING" (e.g. basic reference sources and popular sets) to assure their availability at all times. Please do not remove non-circulating books from the Library stacks; these books are meant to only be used in the Mabie Law Library. "NON-CIRCULATING" books are marked with a special label or stamped inside the front cover.

Renewals

All loans, except reserve items, may be renewed twice unless there has been a recall or hold request for the item. Renewals may be made online, in person, or by phone at (530) 752-3327.

Reserve items check out for one day and may be signed out overnight by law students. Due to the high demand of some reserve materials (especially "Course Reserve" materials), renewals will either be limited or require the return of material(s) to the library for renewal.

Student Accounts

Law students can access circulation account information, i.e. items checked out and the due date for each item, by using UC Library Search.

Book Returns

Mabie Law Library books and interlibrary loan books borrowed from libraries other than Shields Library must be returned to the Mabie Law Library Circulation desk. After hours, they can be dropped in the book return slot at the Circulation desk or in the book drop located outside of the building (on the north side ramp near the north side entrance). All Shields Library books must be returned to Shields Library directly.

Fines

Books not returned after two recalls or overdue notices will be billed at the cost of the book plus a $35.00 processing fee per book (reduced to $15.00 for books returned within one week of the receipt of the bill). Charges for damaged books will be assessed on an individual basis.

Borrowing from Shields Library

Law students and faculty may borrow items from other campus libraries.

Faculty who wish to have students borrow items on their behalf: Please visit Shields Library's Library Accounts page and scroll down to "Proxy Library Accounts" for more information. To complete the online proxy application, select "Apply for a Proxy Card".

Law students and faculty can request for Shields Library items to be sent to the Mabie Law Library. Access UC Library Search and select "Sign In", then search for the item you want and place a request, selecting "Mabie Law Library" as the pickup location. These items can be returned to the Mabie Law Library for return to Shields.

Interlibrary Loans

Books from other libraries may be requested by law students and faculty at the Mabie Law Library circulation desk, or a request can be sent by email to lawlibref@ucdavis.edu. Loans can take a week or more to be received from the lending institution. Brief items may be obtained by fax or e-mail.

UC Davis Law students may also place an online interlibrary loan request for materials found through UC Library Search.

Some items, such as textbooks, may not be requested via ILL. All books are subject to recall. Books may be renewed if no holds are pending. Renewals may be made at the Circulation desk or by phone.

Mabie Law Library books and books borrowed from libraries other than Shields Library must be returned to the Mabie Law Library Circulation desk, or dropped off after hours in the book return slot at the Circulation desk. Interlibrary Loans originally picked up from Shields should be returned to Shields. If you picked up your interlibrary loan items at the Mabie Law Library, you may return these items to the Mabie Law Library.

Books not returned will be billed at the cost of the book plus a $35.00 processing fee per book (reduced to $15.00 for books returned within one week of the receipt of the bill). Charges for damaged books will be assessed on an individual basis.

The Mabie Law Library will loan circulating books to other libraries and public agencies. The Mabie Law Library is a member of the OCLC Interlibrary Loan (ILL) program. Books are loaned for up to three months.
