Role of Advisor

What is the Role of the On-Site Supervisor for Externships?

Approved field placement supervisors must:

  1. Be actively licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction in which their supervision will take place. Some exceptions are made for certain placements, such as in the legislature or with lobbying groups.
  2. Initial and sign the Memorandum of Agreement at the beginning of the semester, review the student’s self-prepared mid-semester evaluation, and write a final evaluation of the student's overall performance.
  3. Provide regular and specific feedback to the student.
  4. The externship director will meet at least once during the semester with the student and field supervisor. Currently, all meetings are on video conferencing platforms.
