Aidín Castillo '11 Selected as First Maggio Fellow
Aidín Castillo '11 has been selected as the inaugural Michael Maggio Immigrants' Rights Summer Fellow. The Maggio Selection Committee received more than 100 applications from students across the United States and on February 4 announced Castillo as the recipient.
Castillo received strong recommendations for the position as a result of her many activities on behalf of the immigrant community. She has worked on two factually challenging and legally complicated cancellation of removal cases as a UC Davis School of Law Immigration Clinic student, served as a La Raza Law Students Association officer, organized educational programs for the legal community about issues affecting immigrants, volunteered with the California Rural Citizenship Campaign, and interned at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, among other activities.
Castillo will use her fellowship to better educate and increase the success of immigrants on their path to legal status and citizenship by offering presentations in remote migrant and immigrant communities of the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento area about current immigration law, eligibility requirements for common immigration benefits, and how to prepare for immigration reform.
The Michael Maggio Immigrants' Rights Summer Fellowship was established in 2009 by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law (CHRCL), and the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild (NIP/NLG), to commemorate the life and legal contributions of Michael Maggio, an extraordinary immigration attorney and individual who was a life-long advocate for justice, equality, and peace.
