On March 8, the Lambda Law Students Association hosted the Annual Bill Smith Lecture by Bamby Salcedo, President and CEO of TransLatin@ Coalition. The lecture was the highlight of Lambda Culture Week.
Based in Los Angeles, Salcedo, a dedicated social justice activist, shared her story of inspiration and hope with students. The coalition provides for direct services and empowerment and promoting political change. Salcedo talked about continued discrimination against trans people in California.
The Aoki Center on Critical Race and Nation Studies this week continued its Interdisciplinary Speaker Series with a lecture, "Promotive and Inhibitive Outcomes Among Black Girls in California Schools: A Civil Rights Data Collection Exploratory Study," presented by Professor Faheemah Mustafaa, Kiara Jones and Tadria Cardenas Rico.
Cameroon Supreme Court Justice and women’s rights leader Vera Ngassa spoke to a global audience on March 2 as part of the California International Law Center (CILC) series “Global Voices on Human Rights, Democracy, and Social Justice.”
Each year the Lambda Law Students Association invites a speaker in the disability or LGBTQ rights fields to speak in Bill Smith's honor. Bamby Salcedo, President and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition, will be the featured 2023 Bill Smith Memorial Lecture speaker.
On Friday, March 24 the "After Dobbs: 'New Directions in Reproductive Justice'" conference will bring together leading scholars, activists, and state lawmakers from across the country to consider the state of play and best future strategies on issues of reproductive health, rights, and justice.
It was my pleasure to attend the 16th Annual Intraschool Negotiations Competition hosted by the King Hall Negotiations Team on March 4. This competition gives our students the chance to hone their negotiations skills. It is truly an invaluable educational experience for our students.
The King Hall Negotiations Team is one of the largest and most energized student organizations at King Hall. The teams have been incredibly successful in competitions at the regional, national – even international – levels.
Professor Irene Joe and Associate Director of Admission Lindsay Chuang attended a UC Davis basketball game in February as part of Black faculty and staff appreciation night. Professor Joe participated in the trivia contest and even took a half-court shot! It's great to see King Hall supporting UC Davis athletics.
The wonderful celebrations begin! The Black Law Students Association held its 4th annual banquet in downtown Sacramento on Feb. 25. All of the students, faculty, friends, family and others joyously celebrated the BLSA Class of 2023 that includes Aaliayah McKnight Corcran, Bradley Ojala, Briana Cravanas, Mariam Soussouadouno, Noriya Bragg, Riki Walter, Ugomma Mwin, and Victoria Basirika.
I was very pleased to see that Austin Turner '21 was featured in the Solano Community College newsletter for his success in the Community College Pathway to Law School (CCPLS) Initiative. In the video above he discusses his time at King Hall and the importance of scholarship support he had throughout his law school education.
Last week, the UC Davis Journal of International Law and Policy held its annual symposium. The conference was entitled "Justice in Conflict and the Role of International Law." Professor Irene Joe welcomed the attendees.
On President Day's weekend, a group from the Schwartz/Levin Inn of Court prepared a meal for 100 for the unhoused at Fourth and Hope in Woodland. Judge Steve Gevercer (Sacramento) took charge of preparing the pasta. Presiding Judge Dan Maguire (Yolo County) made the Greek salad. The meal also included cookies, fruit, rolls, and water.
I was pleased to be able to represent UC Davis School of Law in this community activity.
On Feb. 17, I had the wonderful opportunity to learn more about environmental racism and justice. Besides the Environmental Law Society symposium on the topic, I was invited to hear a talk by José Manuel Santillana Blanco, University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellow in the UC Davis American Studies Department.
Today, I attended the UC Davis Environmental Law Society (ELS) Symposium on “Walking the Walk Toward an Equitable Future: The Urgent Need to Center Environmental Justice in Law and Policy." The conference was designed to foster discussion and educate guests about community environmental justice goals, the government resources available to accomplish these goals, and the strategies to ensure these goals are met when systems fail.
I had the honor of welcoming the conference attendees with the conference starting bright and early on a brisk winter morning.
Yesterday during a meeting with the deans we had the wonderful surprise guest appearance of Lawcappella. The group of students sang two songs for us as part of the Lawcappella Valentine's Day Grams program. One of the songs was dedicated to "Dean Sciv" our Senior Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Emily Scivoletto. It was a lively performance that brought many smiles and great tunes to our meeting!
