Public Interest Mixer to Bring Together Students, Alums

Serving under-represented populations has always been a big part of the mission of the UC Davis School of Law, and the Law School is always looking for ways to support its students and alumni who eschew higher-paying careers to work as public defenders, legal aid attorneys, and in other areas of public interest law.  That’s why the Law School is sponsoring a Public Interest Mixer for public interest law attorneys and current students on January 30.

“Particularly after the rise in UC tuition fees, public interest students today face a number of hurdles,” said Deborah Gettleman ’09, who helped to organize the event.  “Given the reputation King Hall has for training highly qualified public interest attorneys, I felt like an event like this was necessary to help current students go into the field they’ve worked so hard to be a part of.”

Gettleman said she hoped the mixer would provide both students and alumni with the opportunity to make important connections.  “The public interest community is a tight-knit one, and our goals are to provide an opportunity for alums to reconnect with their classmates and for current students to network with attorneys working in the public interest sector.”

Gettleman, who has worked as an advocate for women in prison, was enthusiastic about her career choice and King Hall’s support for public interest law.  “I have always believed that a law degree is a powerful tool to wield in the struggle for social justice,” she said.  “I am thrilled that King Hall is able to foster such a supportive and inspiring environment for its public interest law students and am really looking forward to connecting with new alums.”

The event will begin at 6 p.m. at Bistro 33, located at 226 F Street in Davis.  For more information, contact Kirsten Hill at [email protected] or 530-752-5135.
