Professor Soucek Helps Lead D.C. Symposium on Institutional Speech
Professor Brian Soucek participated in the “Institutional Speech and the Collegiate Mission” symposium held Oct. 26 in Washington, D.C. Soucek served as a session leader along with University of California, Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman, University of Iowa President Barbara J. Wilson and Nicholas Burbules, chair of the General University Policy Committee, University of Illinois.
Soucek, former chair of the University of California’s systemwide faculty academic freedom committee, drew from his article “Academic Freedom and Departmental Speech,” which was published by the American Association of University Professors earlier this year.
The Bipartisan Policy Center and the University of California National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement presented the symposium.
Professor Soucek’s primary teaching and research interests are antidiscrimination law, civil procedure, constitutional law, and refugee/asylum law. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Mark R. Kravitz in Connecticut, and Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Professor Soucek is a UC Davis Chancellor’s Fellow.
