1L Barbecue, Implicit Bias Training, Community Read Highlight Class of 2025 Intro Week

UC Davis Law’s Class of 2025 Intro Week runs from Sunday, Aug. 14-Friday, Aug. 19 and offers a full slate of activities aimed at acclimating incoming first-year students to law school life.

Sunday’s 1L Welcome Barbecue at the UC Davis Activities and Recreation Center will start the week’s events. UC Davis Law Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Alumni Board President the Honorable Nancy Wieben Stock ’76, Assistant Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Kristen Mercado, and Law Students Association President Jason Wong ’23 will speak at the event.

Further Intro Week activities will take place at King Hall and Wright Hall. Professors David Horton and Elizabeth Joh will teach the Introduction to Law course. As part of its continued commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, the law school will hold an interactive, 90-minute implicit bias training on Wednesday for 1L students and Academic Success tutors. DEI consultant and strategic development specialist Marion Cloete and UC Davis Law Director of Diversity and Student Life Alexis Elston will lead the training.

UC Davis Law invites the Class of 2025 and the entire King Hall community to participate in Thursday’s community read of Zach Norris’ insightful book Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing, Prisons, and Punishment. Now in its third year, the community read encourages discussion of the most urgent social justice issues facing our nation and world.

Later Thursday, first-year students will hear about the law school’s long tradition of public service at a panel discussion moderated by Associate Career Services Director for Public Interest and Government Sofia Parino and featuring UC Immigrant Legal Services Center Executive Director Aidín Castillo ’11, Thumbtack Senior Counsel and Director Nima Rahimi ’13 and Briana Cravanas ’23.

Intro Week concludes Friday with the Introduction to Law exam, a professional photo session and an optional LSA softball game. The fall semester begins Monday, Aug. 22.
