As the King Hall community comes back together for another school year, we are excited to continue our discussions about our system of justice, the rule of law, and critical perspectives often without voice in our legal system. We’re looking forward to our Racial Justice Speaker Series in the 2022-23 academic year, and the continued work of our DEI Committee, made up of students, staff, faculty and alumni. And, in our third annual King Hall Community Read on August 18th, our community will engage with our incoming first year students in a discussion of police reform and transformative justice.
This year's community read book choice is UC Davis' Campus Community Book Project book: Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing, Prisons, and Punishment by Zach Norris. As part of Intro Week, we invite King Hall community members to take part in a community discussion of this book.
The small discussion groups, held at King Hall, will include incoming first-year students, upper division students, faculty, staff members, and alumni - a true King Hall community read. UC Davis will be hosting events throughout the school-year specifically related to this book, including an Author's Talk with Zach Norris that will be hosted in February at the Mondavi Center.
All community read attendees will receive free lunch.
Volunteers needed: Each small discussion group will have 1-2 discussion facilitators that will help guide the conversation. Discussion group facilitators will receive a free copy of the book, a facilitator guide and further instructions in advance of the date. If you are interested in serving as a facilitator, please indicate so on your registration form.
Thank you for your participation in this important event for our new students and the entire King Hall community!
