Life as Dean (2008-24)

On Nov. 2, I had the pleasure of attending the Yolo Unity Bar Awards Gala at the El Macero Country Club. I was honored to receive the Education Award. King Hall had more of our remarkable representatives at this ceremony, who also received well-deserved accolades.

Earlier this week, the Immigration Law Association and Humanitarian Aid Legal Organization (HALO) sponsored a public interest program of public interest attorneys.

On Wednesday, the Aoki Center welcomed the King Hall community for a documentary screening of Sansón and Me by filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes. The film took attendees on a journey into the life of a young immigrant serving life without parole and a filmmaker who was his court interpreter.

Tonight the Aoki Center is hosting a documentary screening of Sansón and Me. Afterwards, there will be a discussion with Professor Aldana and Professor Chin to address the interconnectedness of immigration law and criminal law systems.

Join King Hall's Latinx Law Students Association and Immigration Law Association this Thursday for a Dia de los Muertos Celebration in the courtyard!

Today the Aoki Center brought a panel to King Hall to discuss Afghan refugees in Northern California. Among the refugee workers who spoke was Sarah Torres '07, a law school alum. She is a managing attorney at Opening Doors.

This week Professor Maceo Montoya, an artist, book author, and teacher, spoke on "How Narrative Shapes Us" in the Aoki Center x Hispanic Serving Institution Speaker Series. The series is co-sponsored by the Vice Chancellor's Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Professor Montoya is the son of a friend, Malaquias Montoya, professor emeritus in Chicanx Studies at UC Davis.

On Tuesday UC Davis Law's California International Law Center (CILC) held a presentation titled Protecting Human Rights and Preserving Civil Liberties: The Role of Courts in a Democracy with Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and Member of Parliament.

The Dean’s Office entry for this year’s pumpkin contest is called: “Disco Dance Daydream.”

On October 21, Professor Rick M. Frank ‘74 received the California Lawyers Association Environmental Law Section's 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented during the 32nd Annual Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite.

On Wednesday, we were hosted by Bijal Vakil ‘96 at Allen & Overy’s San Francisco office for lunch.

More than 30 alumni joined us representing unique practice areas and many generations of King Hall grads.

I had the opportunity to provide an update on what’s been happening at King Hall and alums had an opportunity to network over lunch.

Monday was a busy day at King Hall. The Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, held oral arguments in the Kalmanovitz Appellate Courtroom. The court heard oral arguments in two cases: one related to a police search and seizure, and the other involving a tort case with a civil procedure issue being appealed. Among the justices present was Stacy Boulware Eurie '95, an accomplished and loyal alumna.
