Settlement Provides Water for Parched River and Salmon

Harrison "Hap" Dunning, a UC Davis emeritus law professor and authority on water law, commented in The Los Angeles Times on the restoration of water to a section of the San Joaquin River devastated by the Friant-Kern canal. Nearly 60 years ago, the canal destroyed miles of the San Joaquin River, as mountain water was diverted to farmland and a section of the river turned to dust, killing tens of thousands of Chinook salmon. The agreement, still in the final stages of approval, will return partial year-round flows to the river. "The San Joaquin was just killed," said Dunning. "It's a monumental restoration."
