Professor Comments on Pay for UC Provost who Resigned

Law Professor Daniel Simmons, a former chairman of UC's academic council, commented in the San Francisco Chronicle on the practice of continuing to pay retired UC administrators after they resign or retire. It's not unusual for retiring UC administrators to be given a year's sabbatical to catch up in their field before returning to teaching and research, says Simmons. "It's appropriate as an opportunity for someone to restart their research. It takes a while to get back up to speed."

Former Provost M.R.C. Greenwood, who was UCs highest-ranking academic officer, stepped down earlier this month during a conflict-of-interest investigation. She continues to be paid more than $25,000 a month. Some lower-paid university employees question the practice of providing a years paid leave after an administrator retires or resigns.
