Professor Amann Comments on Piracy for CBS Radio's Osgood File

Professor Diane Marie Amann commented for the CBS Radio program The Osgood File on international law issues connected to the potential prosecution of a captured Somali pirate.  Abduhl Wali-i-Musi, the only surviving pirate of the four who attacked the American merchant ship Maersk Alabama, is in New York to face possible charges in a federal courtroom.

"The first question that comes to mind is: Can he be tried in U.S. courts? I think that the answer to that is: very likely yes," said Professor Amann, who also commented that the case is unlikely to reach resolution any time soon.  "Federal proceedings, even the simplest of them, take easily half a year-and sometimes longer."

Diane Marie Amann is a Professor at the UC Davis School of Law and Director of the California International Law Center at King Hall.  Issues related to post-9/11 detention, interrogation, and prosecution are a focus of her scholarship, with articles published in Transnational Law and Contemporary Problems, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and Columbia Journal of Transnational Law.
