Associate Dean Amar Comments on Supreme Court Decision for KQED
Associate Dean Vikram Amar was interviewed by Michael Krasny for a segment of the KQED radio "Forum" program examining the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision removing restrictions on political spending by corporations and unions. The program also touched on the possibility of the imminent retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens.
Associate Dean Amar said the Court's ruling "is going to have a major impact, although the precise contours of that impact are hard to predict." He pointed out that it remains to be seen as to what kinds of issues corporations will become involved in, what the reactions from shareholders will be to activities not directly tied to profit making, and whether the Republican or Democratic Party will be most affected. "So no one doubts that this was a big deal, but I think making specific predictions is going to be hard until we get a feel for how things operate in the next couple years," he said.
