AALS 2024 Conference to Feature King Hall Faculty

UC Davis Law faculty members are preparing to attend the Association of American Law Schools 2024 conference Jan. 3-6. “Defending Democracy” is the theme of the meeting that will take place in Washington, D.C.

On Wednesday, Jan. 3 Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Afra Afsharipour will participate in the AALS Discussion Group “Can Companies Help?: Furthering Racial Equity Through Corporate & Securities Laws and Disclosures” at 10 a.m. Afsharipour is also chair-elect of the Comparative Law section.

Later that day, Dean Kevin R. Johnson will participate in the For the Law School Dean Section that’s co-sponsored by Minority Groups at 1 p.m. On Friday, Jan. 5 he will take part in the Lightning Round Session – Election 2024 panel at 3:15 p.m.

Professor Donna Shestowsky is chair of the executive committee for the Alternative Dispute Resolution section. She helped organize the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section’s panel, “Difficult Conversations in Polarized Times: The Dining Room, Conference Room, or Town Square.” This year she is receiving two awards. On Wednesday, Jan. 3 she will be honored with the AALS Scholar Award from the Litigation Section at 12 p.m. On Thursday, Jan. 4 she is receiving the Section of the Year award at the AALS Awards Ceremony at 1:15 p.m.

Professor Nila Bala will participate in the Criminal Law Section panel, Unraveling the Threads of Failure: The Anatomy of Unsuccessful Criminal Law Reforms” on Thursday, Jan. 4 at 8 a.m. On Friday, Jan. 5 she will take part in the Family and Juvenile Law Section “Works-in-Progress” panel at 12 p.m.

Professor Aaron Tang will moderate the Constitutional Law Section panel “Teaching Stare Decisis - From the Warren Court (and Before) to the Roberts Court (and Beyond)” on Friday, Jan. 5 at 12 p.m.

Professor Stacy-Ann Elvy will take part in the Commercial and Consumer Law Section “Consumer Law in the Spotlight” panel on Friday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m.

Professor Vikram D. Amar will participate in the Scholarship Section “Defending Democracy in the Law School” panel on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 10 a.m.

Professor Andrea Cann Chandrasekher will speak in the Law and the Social Sciences’ panel “New Fronts in Equality Law and Social Sciences” on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 10 a.m.

Professor Brian Soucek is an executive committee member of the section on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.

Professor Carlton F.W. Larson is secretary of the Legal History Section.
