KATHERINE BELL retired from the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office in 2003 and has been doing consulting work since then as well as a little teaching (criminal justice to undergrads). "Lately, I have been on jury duty. (Yes, I was selected to serve). I ran into MIKE GARCIA (who is still a Judge of the Sacramento County Superior Court courthouse while our court was on a break."
FRANK BRICENO: "As I look at the list of the MLK, Jr. , class of '74, that you sent in your plea to send in a note, I see names of those with whom I have shared a lot during my days at UCD; never will I forget the first day of Real Property (this has been told better sometime before,... but), I think it was the first class of the law school career, when a MR. ANDERS spoke brilliantly about a case that had been given to us to read before the start of classes; after hearing his comments, most of us went home wondering what we were doing there - turns out that he had worked on the matter in some capacity and was personally familiar with the facts and legal issues. Where's his name on the list?
I see names of those with whom I shared houses, rooms, office, stress of finals, intramural sports, ski slopes, nightclub, and, of course a few beers here and there; and there are names of those with whom I only shared 3 years of education that has brought about a fairly comfortable and rewarding life. I am pleased to know, that for the most part, you are all out there and doing well. I am now conducting a sole practice in Santa Rosa, on occasion running into PATRICK EMERY and LES PERRY, professionally, and personally on the "do gooder" circuit. I have a great spouse of 28 years (married years, not age of spouse), Penny, and two sons, Peter and Mark, who are doing a good job of spending more time and money in college than I did. And I am fortunate to have good health, kept most of my hair, and still like to share a ski slope, and now, a fly fishing stream, among other things, and a few beers, here and there. It would be good to read that you are all doing well; keep us posted.
DAVID I. BROWN: For the last several years, in addition to my litigation practice (insurance defense and general litigation) I have been an arbitrator and mediator, handling a variety of civil disputes. I have also lectured on civil trial practice and underinsured and uninsured motorist law for the bar in addition to serving as a judge pro tem in the Sacramento, Yolo and El Dorado superior courts. My wife Debra and I are proud of our daughter Alexis, who has started her second year of law school at George Washington in D.C."
BEN BYCEL is the Executive Director of the Connecticut State Ethics Commission - a post he assumed after practicing in Vermont for some years.
SUSAN EDLING: "I can report that I'm in the same place I was in 1974. McDonough Holland and Allen PC seems to be my permanent home but I am happy to share it with many more recent King Hall grads. I also enjoy spending more time mentoring and coaching in the real estate practice -- as befits my advanced years."
LARRY EMERT: "After living in Southern California for 25 years, Phyllis and I left Alta Loma to return 'home' - back to the East Coast. Since December of 2000, I have been working in Manhattan as a Senior Attorney for the Office of Chief Counsel for the Department of the Treasury doing labor law representing management. We currently are living in Mahwah, New Jersey. My work phone is (917) 421-4733.
Footnote: On 9/11 I was working at the World Trade Center - building 7 (which collapsed later in the day after 1 and 2). I happened to be out of the office at an arbitration hearing.
RICK FRANK reports that after a 30-year career with the California Attorney General's Office--the last three as Attorney General Bill Lockyer's Chief Deputy for Legal Affairs--he has left state service for academia.
Beginning on August 21, 2006, Rick assumed his new duties as Executive Director of the newly-created California Center for Environmental Law & Policy at Boalt Hall, U.C. Berkeley. His contact information at Boalt is: rfrank@law.berkeley.edu; (510) 642-8305.
BRUCE HAGEL: "I am a partner in the law firm of Olson, Hagel and Fishburn with my practice devoted to the representation of persons with disabilities before the Social Security Administration. I am the vice-chairperson of the board of directors of Easter Seals of Superior California. On a personal note, I have been married to Debra Price for 32 years. She is a speech therapist for a local public school district. My sons - Christopher and Gregory - are, respectively, graduates of UC Santa Cruz and CSU San Francisco. My mother and I also received our college degrees from CSU-SF. On my 57th birthday in June of this year I logged sixty miles on my bicycle from Vacaville to Fair Oaks."
RUSS JURA has been put in charge of the Corporate Social Responsibility program for Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. "That apparently entitles me to do more work and to an additional trip per year to Japan for the worldwide Corporate Social Responsibility meeting of all Yamaha related companies."
THEODORE PARK: "I received his J.D from the UC Davis School of Law in 1974. Prior to Law School: I earned my B.S. in Electrical Engineering from UC Davis in 1965, I earned my M.S. in Electrical Engineering from UC Davis in 1967, I was commissioned an Officer in the US Army and served in Vietnam in Combat in 1968 and 1969.
Among other things I attended the US Army Ranger School in 1967 and 1968, graduated and subsequently taught future Strategic Communications Site Commanders at the US Army Signal School at Fort Monmouth. After teaching future site commanders at Fort Monmouth I then served in combat in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 as an Army Ranger as a Captain working with Strategic Communications Site Commanders in combat (most of whom I knew personally).
I was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
After returning from combat and working on General Staff in the Strategic Communications Command I had many questions about what I wanted to do with my life moving forward….. continuing with my Military Career or abandoning my Military Career and pursuing something completely different including becoming an Attorney at Law. I decided to resign my Army Commission and attend Law School at UC Davis. It was the right decision.
Among other things over the years, I have served as a founding partner of a small law firm and I have also served as a senior counsel for the Hewlett Packard Company, Schlumberger Ltd. and Tandem Computer over the years. I am now primarily a happily retired lawyer with a wonderful loving wife, children, grandchildren and good friends. Choosing practicing law and the U.C. Davis School of Law was the right decision for me back in 1974. My background in Electrical Engineering, management, hard work, combat and what I learned at the UC Davis School of Law has served me well. Thank you UC Davis."
JUDGE DAVE ROSENBERG: "This year I will start my fourth year as a Superior Court Judge. Time does fly. I've had a varied assignment this year, primarily on the criminal law side including presiding at felony and misdemeanor jury trials, conducting preliminary hearings, and handling pre-hearing conferences where pleas are taken and sentences imposed. I've also had a healthy dose of civil cases and juvenile matters. I am active on several committees for the Judicial Council and the California Judges Association relating to criminal law, civil law and small claims issues.
I just finished my second year as a faculty member at the Bernard Witkin Judicial College, training new Judges.
I couple of years ago I wrote a treatise entitled "Rosenberg's Rules of Order" - a simplified and understandable guide to parliamentary procedure in the 21st Century. Since that time, "Rosenberg's Rules" has been published by the League of California Cities and is available on their website, and has been adopted as their standard for parliamentary procedure by about 10 California cities. I have also been asked to teach parliamentary procedure courses to local elected and appointed officials this year and early next year by the California State Association of Counties, the League of California Cities, and the City Clerks' Association."
BARBARA SPENCER: "I'm still working as the writ attorney for Division 2 at the First District Court of Appeal and still squeezing in as much travel as I can. In 2005, it was an all-UCD King Hall trip to Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam with KATHY MADER, M.J. HAMILTON, and PHYLLIS ANDELIN. This year there was a short trip to Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende with M.J. HAMILTON and PHYLLIS ANDELIN. I'm soon off to Panama City and Boquete to check things out. I still a long list of places to go and things to do!
