Varun Aery '16 Publishes Three Articles in International Human Rights Law Journals

Varun K. Aery '16 published three manuscripts in prestigious legal journals in the field of international human rights law. His research will appear in the Indonesian Journal of International Law & Comparative Law, the Seattle Journal of Environmental Law, and the UC Davis Journal of International Law & Policy.

Aery's scholarship has focused on expanding legal protections transnationally for the rights to human dignity, work, housing, healthcare, freedom from caste and gender discrimination, clean air, and marriage equality. He said that he was encouraged to engage in legal scholarship by his mentors at King Hall: Professors Karima Bennoune, Anupam Chander, Angela Harris, and Andrea Chandrasekher, as well as Uyen P. Lee, Free Speech and Technology Fellow at the California International Law Center.

Aery's dedication to scholarship aligns with his professional aspirations to become an academic and analyist. As a result of his achievement in legal scholarship, Aery was invited to participate in the Northern California International Legal Scholars Conference, a body of leading West Coast scholars that gather to discuss topical international legal issues and critique works in progress. At the event, Aery provided insight on international environmental rights. Professor Karima Bennoune noted, "His breadth of expertise within his field is truly remarkable."

In addition to being a fellow for the California International Law Center, President of the King Hall International Law Association, and Board Member for the World Affairs Council, Aery is currently serving as the Senior Research Assistant to the United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of Cultural Rights. He plans to pursue his LL.M. and Doctorate in national security and international human rights law.
