Professor Soucek Writes About Diversity Statements for Chronicle of Higher Education

Professor Brian Soucek wrote about the constitutionality of university faculty diversity statements in a May 24 opinion piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The piece draws from Soucek’s recent UC Davis Law Review article “Diversity Statements.”

“I’ll leave it to others to decide whether diversity statements are effective at promoting a more diverse faculty or a more equitable and inclusive learning environment,” Soucek writes in the Chronicle. “But as a law professor and former chair of the University of California’s systemwide academic freedom committee, I can say this: Mandatory diversity statements are constitutional — at least if they are done the right way.

Pepperdine Caruso School of Law Dean Paul L. Caron highlighted Soucek’s law review article on his TaxProf Blog.

Professor Soucek’s primary teaching and research interests are antidiscrimination law, civil procedure, constitutional law, and refugee/asylum law. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Mark R.
