Professor Imwinkelried joins brief challenging bloodstain pattern analysis testimony
In early November, Professor Ed Imwinkelried joined an amicus brief in Ex Parte Joe D. Bryan, a case pending before the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The amici include statisticians, forensic scientists, and evidence scholars. The brief challenges the bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) testimony presented by the prosecution in the trial court. The brief argues that the prosecution experts relied on theories that have been invalidated by recent empirical research. The same group of amici previously filed a challenge to forensic odontology (bite mark) evidence and helped obtain post-conviction relief for a prisoner.
Professor Imwinkelried is a world-renowned evidence expert who has published extensively in the field.
