Professor Feeney Comments for Bee on Teens' Felony Charges

Professor Floyd Feeney commented for the Sacramento Bee on the adult felony charges pending against three Placer County teens who allegedly threw rocks and road signs from an Interstate 80 overpass and seriously injured a driver.

Professor Feeney told the Bee that prosecutors have "tremendous discretion" in charging felony assault as an adult or juvenile crime, depending on a teen suspect's past record and the likelihood of rehabilitation.  In this case, "What you're seeing is the DA saying to the community, this is very serious behavior."

Floyd Feeney is the Homer G. and Ann Berryhill Angelo Professor of Law at the UC Davis School of Law and the winner of the Law School's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1986 and 2008.  The author of seven books and numerous articles, Feeney has received awards from the National Institute of Justice and the California Probation, Parole, and Correctional Association, and is a nationally recognized scholar on election law.
