King Hall Students Shine in ABA Negotiation Competition
The team of Jesse Yang '11 and Patrick Anding '10 placed first and Samuel Carstensen '12 and Andrew Bettencourt '12 placed sixth in the American Bar Association's Law Student Regional Negotiation Competition held at University of Idaho College of Law in Boise on November 7-8.
"We're very proud of our students, and grateful to everyone who helped them prepare," said Professor Donna Shestowsky, who coached the teams.
Anding said that much of the team's success was owed to the assistance of the King Hall Negotiations Board and "the dozens of students who beat us up night after night in practice rounds." Helping out with the training were Sarah McBride '09 and Jeff Osofsky '09, who claimed the International Negotiations Competition title for the United States in a July competition in Chicago. Also helping to prepare the team were Yuri Kvichko '10, Jeremiah Harvey '10, Alan Ho '10, Hazel-Lynne Espejo '10, Valerie Fenchel '11, Rachel Ray '11, Errol Dauis '11, Jesse Suarez '12, and Alexandria Goff '12.
"Building on Sarah McBride and Jeff Osoksky's 2009 world championship was very important to us," said Anding. "We were also very honored to have their extensive help in our preparation. With such great support coming from past and current students, Professor Shestowsky, and the administration, King Hall should be a competitive force for years to come."
"The competition is really a fantastic opportunity for students to get feedback and advice from accomplished lawyers with years of negotiating experience," Anding added. "It is the only place I know of where you can experiment with different negotiating styles and methods and then get candid feedback and advice from federal court judges and seasoned practicing attorneys."
The King Hall team of Anding and Yang will now have the opportunity to advance to the Negotiation Competition Finals in Orlando, Florida in February.
"We are deeply indebted to all the hard work Professor Shestowsky, King Hall Negotiation's Board, and various students who prepared us for the competition," said Yang. "The competition itself was very tough and there were a lot of amazing teams. We look forward to representing King Hall in the ABA National Negotiations Competition in Feburary 2010 that will take place in Orlando, Florida."
