King Hall Faculty to Have Strong Presence at AALS 2023 Conference

UC Davis Law faculty are preparing for the upcoming Association of American Law Schools 2023 conference Jan. 3-7. "How Law Schools Can Make a Difference," is the theme of the conference that will take place in San Diego. 

Dean Kevin R. Johnson will participate in several sessions. On Thursday, Jan. 5 he will take part in the Immigration Law Section's panel "Racism in Immigration Regulation" at 8 a.m. Later that day, Dean Johnson will speak on the "Creating a Welcoming Climate for Our Faculty, Staff, Students in This Polarized World" panel at 3 p.m. On Friday, Jan. 6 Dean Johnson, as chair of the Deans Forum committee, will welcome and introduce the Deans Forum program at 8:45 a.m.

Dean Johnson will receive the AALS’ inaugural Michael A. Olivas Award for Outstanding Leadership in Diversity and Mentoring in the Legal Academy during an awards ceremony Thursday, Jan. 5 at 1:15 p.m.

Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Afra Afsharipour serves on the executive committee for the AALS Section on Comparative Law. She will participate in the Comparative Law Section panel, co-sponsored by East Asian Law & Society, "The Comparative Classroom" on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. On Friday, Jan. 6 Dean Afsharipour will take part in the Business Associations Section "New Law Teacher: Works-in-Progress" panel at 3 p.m.

Professor Karrigan Börk is a panelist for the Natural Resources and Energy Law and Environmental Law Joint Program "Works-in-Progress" panel on Friday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m.

Professor Andrea Chandrasekher will take part in the AALS Workshop for Pretenured Law School Teachers of Color focusing on scholarship on Friday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m.

Professor Eric Fish will speak on the "Professional Responsibility New Voices Program" on Friday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m.

Professor Courtney Joslin will present her article Fractured Families: LGBTQ People and the Family Regulation System during the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues session "LGBTQ Youth Under Attack: How Centering LGBTQ Youth Enhances Equality for All" on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m. The panel is co-sponsored by Children and the Law, Constitutional Law, and Family and Juvenile Law.

Professor Donna Shestowsky is the incoming chair of the executive committee for the Section on Alternative Dispute Resolution. She will serve as moderator of the Alternative Dispute Resolution session "ADR’s on the Bar! Now What?" panel Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 10 a.m.

Professor Brian Soucek is the past chair of the Section on Law and the Humanities and an executive committee member of the Section on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. He will speak on the "New Voices in Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law" panel Thursday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m.

Professor Raquel Aldana is on the executive committee of the International Human Rights Section. Professor Carlton Larson is treasurer of the Legal History Section and on the executive committee for the Section on Law and the Humanities. Professor Mary Ziegler is on the executive committee of the Legal History Section.
