KHLF Shatters A Day of Wages Fundraising Record

The King Hall Legal Foundation (KHLF) announced that it has broken its previous fundraising record for A Day of Wages. The charitable campaign asks students with paid summer jobs to donate a day of their salary to support unpaid public interest legal work. This year, UC Davis School of Law students pledged over $16,000 to A Day of Wages, nearly doubling the previous record. These pledges will fund four 2009 KHLF Public Interest Summer Grants for students at the School of Law. KHLF grants are dedicated to supporting public interest and environmental legal work, and ensuring that law students address the needs of those without access to legal services.

Alan Boudreau, KHLF co-chair, said the student response to A Day of Wages has been overwhelming. "One of the most rewarding parts of asking people to support A Day of Wages was that so many of the donors encouraged their friends to donate, as well. King Hall students have shown real dedication to helping KHLF expand its offerings to public interest students as their need for funding continues to grow dramatically." Dean Rex Perschbacher sums it up best. "Since the Law School's founding in 1966, its most distinguishing feature has been the commitment by students, faculty, and staff to the public interest and public service. These record-breaking contributions by King Hall's students to KHLF, at the same time they are burdened by high tuition and fee levels and at the same time they are making record-breaking gifts directly to the School's annual fund, demonstrates more dramatically than any words, our students' commitment to making 'equal justice under the law' an everyday reality for all California residents."

The King Hall Legal Foundation celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2007-2008. It is a student-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that promotes law as a tool of environmental change and social justice. All of the money raised is a direct result of student fundraising. In addition to A Day of Wages, KHLF will raise money to fund grants and other public interest activities with two special 30th Anniversary events:  the Dr. Ives Charity Basketball Tournament on Sunday, January 27, 2008, and the Annual Spring Charity Auction on Friday, February 22, 2008.

Additional support comes from foundation grants, law firm sponsors, and the generous support of King Hall alumni, faculty, students, parents and friends.
