Johnson Comments on Illegal Immigrant Credit Card Program
Kevin Johnson, associate dean of academic affairs and professor of law, was quoted in a CBS Channel 13 report on a new credit card campaign by Bank of America aimed at illegal immigrants. In the new program, which is now being piloted in Los Angeles County, applicants no longer need a social security number.
Supporters of the program say it's a chance for undocumented workers to achieve their American dream, as long as they're careful.
"It's easy to get overextended on credit. I hope the banks are faithful in ensuring people know what they're getting into," says Johnson.
Johnson has published extensively on immigration law and policy, racial identity, and civil rights in national and international journals. His book, How Did You Get to Be Mexican? A White/Brown Man's Search for Identity, was published in 1999 and was nominated for the 2000 Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. He also has published Race, Civil Rights, and American Law: A Multiracial Approach and Mixed Race America and the Law: A Reader. Johnson's latest book, The "Huddled Masses" Myth: Immigration and Civil Rights was published in 2004.
