Hurricane Katrina and the Continuing Legal Crisis
Eleven law students who spent their Spring Break in New Orleans, providing legal and reconstruction assistance, will talk about their experiences at noon on Thursday, April 5, 2007, in the Wilkins Moot Courtroom.
The law students are members of Humanitarian Aid Legal Organization (HALO), a new student organization at the UC Davis School of Law. The trip was part of a national law student movement, organized through Student Hurricane Network (SHN), to help rebuild and serve legal and social justice organizations in the areas devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The law students maintained a blog during their trip. On returning from New Orleans, Ramaah Sadasivam '09, co-founder of the student group with Neta Borshansky '09, wrote, "Nineteen months after the levees broke and destroyed parts of the city, people are still struggling to get back to a 'normal' life…. Basic essential—access to education/schools, health care, and food—are absent in many parts of the city. I found myself wondering, 'How can this be?' and 'How can this be happening in America?'"
