HALO Students Conduct Immigration Workshop as Part of 'Justice Bus' Program
Students in the UC Davis School of Law Humanitarian Legal Aid Organization (HALO) participated in a "Justice Bus" trip on February 21, providing answers to immigration law questions and help with naturalization applications for 24 underserved Californians. Serving as volunteers were HALO students Erin Choi '15, Jamie Knauer '17, Antonia Wong '16, Holly Snead '17, Erin Gunter '17, Katie Rogers '17, Dean Bubar '16, Kate Holding '17, and Nicole Zanardi '17.
The Justice Bus Project, sponsored by One Justice, takes teams of attorneys and law student volunteers from urban areas to set up free legal clinics for low-income Californians in rural and isolated communities. At the February 21 clinic, HALO students worked alongside volunteers from the International Institute of the Bay Area and El Concilio.
The students received a letter of appreciation from One Justice, which included comments from workshop participants. "We are very grateful for events such as this," one participant stated. "Everyone was very polite and willing to help in any way possible. It was reassuring to have the [volunteers] answer questions and review our paperwork. Overall, it was a great experience and one that I would recommend others take advantage of if possible. Thank you for all that you do!"
HALO sponsors events each year that provide King Hall students with opportunities to provide legal assistance to underserved communities, including an annual spring break trip to a community in need. This year's spring break trip will see HALO students travel to San Antonio, Texas.
