An Examination of the Black Divide
Professor Angela Onwuachi-Willig will deliver the presentation "From When and Where I Descend: An Examination of the Black Divide on Affirmative Action" at the University of Virginia School of Law on the current debate about who should be the beneficiaries of affirmative action. She asks, "If the point of affirmative action is to open doors for victims of past discrimination who have been unable to overcome that discrimination, should affirmative action programs include people who are not the descendents of former slaves, such as black immigrant children who were raised in the United States by their immigrant parents or people who have a dual ancestry, such as biracial students of African descent?"
The presentation is on Thursday, April 20 at noon, and is co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Race and Law and the Law & Humanities Program at the Virginia School of Law.
In addition, she is speaking that evening as part of a colloquium on "Marriage in Law, Culture, and Imagination" at the Virginia School of Law.
