Endangered Species Act
Professor Holly Doremus provided her analysis in the Christian Science Monitor on a bill to amend the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 currently before the US House of Representatives. Doremus' special interests are environmental law, land use law, and law and science. She holds a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from Cornell University, as well as a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. The ESA of 1973 provides for the conservation of species that are endangered or threatened with extinction, and the conservation of the ecosystems on which they depend. There are currently 1,855 listings (endangered and threatened) under the ESA, and 1,290 U.S. listings. Doremus is concerned that the proposed amendment to the bill will weaken current protection of species and deepen existing divides on the issue. Full article, September 29, 2005
