Christopher Carr '10 Wins Immigration Clinic Victory
In another victory for the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Clinic, Christopher Carr '10 helped a man achieve lawful permanent resident status after many years of uncertainty over his status.
Carr's client came to the United States from Central America in the ‘90s and applied for political asylum, only to have his request summarily denied, and to have his subsequent attempts to pursue legal status tied up in bureaucratic confusion. He had applied for membership in a class action suit against the government, American Baptist Church v. Thornburg (ABC), but did not have proof of his ABC membership, which was necessary for him to apply to legal status under the Nicaraguan and Central American Relief Act (NACARA). The Immigration Clinic helped him to obtain proof of ABC registration, and Carr helped him to use this in applying for suspension under the provisions of the NACARA. The client was granted legal status on the day of his interview, November 10, and now has the opportunity to work toward full citizenship.
