Black Law Students Association Hosts Speakers Series at King Hall

The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) has hosted a series of speaking presentations at King Hall during the Spring Semester, highlighting a variety of legal topics and issues affecting the Black community.

On February 16, Keith Staten, a leading private criminal defense attorney in the Sacramento area, discussed his legal career and the disproportionate effects the criminal justice system has on people of color. On February 24, Dr. James Armstead, a retired professor of the U.S. Naval War College and international law expert, delivered a talk on "The Moral Responsibility of Legal Advocates as an International Citizen."  On March 3, BLSA joined the National Lawyers Guild and La Raza Law Students Association in co-sponsoring a documentary screening and discussion with filmmaker Stanley Wrice, a former inmate wrongfully convicted and later exonerated. On March 14, Alex Johnson, Executive Director of the Children's Defense Fund, presented a talk on "Effects of the Juvenile Justice System on Minority Children."

BLSA also hosted other themed events for the King Hall community during February, Black History Month.
