Anita Bamshad '16 and Niall Roberts '16 Take Top Honors in Neumiller Competition

Neumiller ParticipantsThe team of Anita Bamshad '16 and Niall Roberts '16 took top honors at the 46th Annual Irving L. Neumiller Competition held in the Kalmanovitz Appellate Courtroom on April 11 before a distinguished panel of judges including Judge Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Judge Kim McLane Wardlaw, also of the Ninth Circuit, and Justice Leondra Kruger of the Supreme Court of California.

Bamshad and Roberts narrowly edged the team of Aaron Israel '16 and Abigail Mulvihill '16, who were honored with the Award for Outstanding Brief.

The Neumiller Competition is the culmination of each year's Appellate Advocacy program at King Hall, wherein top students from the Appellate Advocacy course are selected to compete in front of a panel of distinguished judges.  In recent years, the panels have included Chief Justice of California Tani Cantil-Sakauye '84, Seventh Circuit Judge Frank Easterbrook, Eighth Circuit Judge Steven Colloton, Ninth Circuit Judges Michael Daly Hawkins, Sandra S. Ikuta, Stephen Reinhardt, and Mary Schroeder, among others.

King Hall faculty in attendance at the April 11 event included Dean Kevin R. Johnson, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law Vik Amar, Professors Alan Brownstein, John Hunt, and Carlton Larson, as well as Visiting Lecturers Shama Mesiwala '98 and Richard Schickele.

Also in attendance was Kurtis Keller '12, an associate with Neumiller and Beardslee. The Neumiller Competition is named in honor of Irving L. Neumiller, a respected partner who established the firm's trial practice.
