American Constitution Society Week
A series of noontime events are planned for American Constitution Society Week, October 16-19, 2006, by the UC Davis law student chapter of the American Constitution Society (ASC).
On Monday, Steve Ybarra, Former Chair of the Chicano Latino Caucus of the Democratic Party and a member of the Executive Board of the California Democratic Party, will talk about voting rights.
On Tuesday, Brian Matthews, Deputy Public Defender in Santa Clara County, and Alan Cohen, attorney at Meyers Nave, will discuss recent legislative changes to sexually violent predator (SVP) punishment and the upcoming proposition, also known as Jessica's Law.
On Wednesday, representatives from the California Nurses Association, proponents of Prop 89, and the California Teachers Association, opponents to the proposition, will speak on the merits and concerns for this public campaign funding initiative.
On Thursday, Hugh Bower, consultant to the Assembly Committee on Housing and Community Development and Lisa Ikemoto, UC Davis Professor of law, will discuss eminent domain, particularly in light of recent judicial rulings on its use in economic development. They will also speak directly to its use in California and the implications of the initiative.
ACS is a national organization of law students, law professors, judges, practicing lawyers and others. They seek to revitalize and transform the legal debate, from law school classrooms, to federal courtrooms, to the congressional hearing rooms where judicial nominations are weighed.
