The Verge quotes Professor Joh about Ring 'traffic stop counter-surveillance' tool

Professor Elizabeth Joh spoke to The Verge about Ring Car Cam’s new Traffic Stop feature, which records activities within and in front of a driver’s car and can be activated when the driver says, “Alexa, I am being pulled over.”

Joh called the feature a tool for “traffic stop counter-surveillance.”

“In policing, technology is all about power,” Joh told The Verge. “Redistributing that power can be an important means of police accountability.” But the technology also raises privacy concerns. Read the story

Professor Joh's scholarship focuses on criminal procedure and policing, with a special emphasis on DNA evidence, undercover policing, and new surveillance technologies. She is the recipient of King Hall’s 2017 Distinguished Teaching Award.
