UC Davis Law Review Presents 2009 Hopkins Awards
Editors Kimberly A. Lucia '09 and John Pingel '09 have earned the UC Davis Law Review's highest honor for student writing. Law Review faculty advisor, Professor Shannon Weeks McCormack presented the 2009 Patrick J. Hopkins Memorial Writing Awards at a dinner on April 16.
Since 1975, the Hopkins award has recognized one or two Law Review editors for "the best written article that makes a significant contribution to legal knowledge." Winners receive a cash prize named for Patrick J. Hopkins, a gifted Law Review editor who died in a car accident. His parents established the Patrick J. Hopkins Memorial Fund to honor the memory of their son and to recognize and encourage legal achievement and excellence. A faculty committee headed by Professor McCormack and including Professors Afra Afsharipour, Katherine Florey, and Peter Lee selected the winners.
Kimberly Lucia's note, "United States v. Baylor University Medical Center: Impact of FRCP 15(c)(2) on the False Claims Act's Seal Provision," appeared in the UC Davis Law Review's November 2008 issue. John Pingel's note, "Do Congressmen Still Pay Parking Tickets?: The Overextension of Legislative Privilege in United States v. Rayburn House Office Building, 497 F.3d 654 (D.C. Cir. 2007)" will be in the June 2009 issue. Lucia is a senior notes and comments editor and Pingel is Law Review's managing editor.
Ranked 31st among legal journals in the United States, the UC Davis Law Review publishes scholarly articles from legal academics, practitioners, and student editors. Each academic year, the staff of nearly 70 students publishes one volume composed of five issues, including one issue devoted to an annual symposium. Members, second-year law students, must complete notes or comments under the mentorship of third-year student editors in order to become editors the following year. The Law Review will publish seven notes and comments by student editors in its current volume. For more information, please visit http://lawreview.law.ucdavis.edu/.
