UC Davis-BLSA Wins UCLA 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

On April 1, 2011, the King Hall team of Edward (E.J.) Brown '12, Charles Oshinuga '11, and Embert Madison, Jr. '13, and Kenneth Obum (M.A. University of La Verne, 2007) traveled to Los Angeles and won the UCLA 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament sponsored by the Langston Bar Association, besting 12 teams from law schools throughout California.

During play for tournament seeding, games were played to 15 by one's and two's, under a 20 minute time limit.  The Davis team got off to a slow start, losing their first game to the UCLA-A Team, 15-4.  However, Davis rallied and won their next game 15-9, and headed into the playoffs as one of the eight remaining teams.

All playoff matches were played to 21, with a 20 minute time limit.  Davis had found their rhythm, coasting through their first two playoff matches by defeating Loyola Marymount 20-14, and the UCLA-B Team 21-11.

The Championship contest was a rematch of Davis's first match of the day against the undefeated UCLA-A Team.  After a slow start, Davis was down 9-3, but rallied back to tie the contest 17-17.  When UCLA regained possession, they looked to get to the rim and draw fouls.  UCLA's Almuhtada Smith made a strong move to the rim, but Charles Oshinuga met Smith at the basket, cleanly blocking his shot.  Upon regaining possession, Oshinuga set a hard screen for Kenneth Ubom, who then nailed a two-point shot to give Davis its first lead, 19-17. After a missed Davis basket, UCLA regained possession and drained a two-pointer to tie the game at 19.  Again, Davis turned up the defense, and Embert Madison, Jr. created another key turnover.  With the ball in hand, Madison drove hard to the hoop and found an open E.J. Brown, who nailed a two-point shot to end the contest.  The UCLA A-Team was stunned.  Davis won the match 21-19 and earned the right to be called champions.

The Davis trio returned from Los Angeles on April 2, 2011 and competed in the Dr. Ives Basketball Tournament on April 3, 2011.
