Sara Granda '09 Successfully Petitions Supreme Court to Take Bar Exam
In an act that made headlines across the nation and drew lavish praise from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sara Granda '09 successfully petitioned the California Supreme Court to order the state bar association to allow her to take the bar exam this week after previously rejecting her application.
Granda said she initially was not permitted to take the exam because the state paid her fee by check and thus did not submit credit card information with her application, which prompted the automated system to reject it. The state covered her fee because, Granda told several news agencies, her only source of income is her monthly state disability payment, and she doesn't have a credit card. (Granda was injured in an automobile accident and has been paralyzed from the neck down since age 17.) She petitioned the California Supreme Court on Monday, one day before the exam. Hours later, she learned the Court would allow her to sit for the exam.
In a statement, Governor Schwarzenegger said, "I am pleased to hear that Sara will not be penalized by a simple bureaucratic error that would have postponed years of hard work and created many more months of anticipation. Sara has overcome much in her life, is an inspiration to us all and I wish her luck on tomorrow's test."
Dean Kevin R. Johnson said, "Sara Granda has faced challenges most of us can only imagine. We were all proud to see her graduate and wish her enormous success. We have seen her overcome many other obstacles, and we are glad this issue has been resolved quickly."
