Professor Hing Publishes Commentary on Immigration Enforcement in NAM
Professor Bill Ong Hing published a commentary in New American Media (NAM) on the Obama administration's expansion of 287 (g) programs that allow local police to enforce federal immigration laws. Professor Hing writes that the programs had resulted in "heinous due process abuses" during the Bush administration and that the decision to expand them has "sent shock waves through the immigrant rights community."
Professor Hing's commentary lists several examples of problems that have occurred with the programs and notes the Obama administration's promises to more closely monitor local police in their immigration enforcement efforts. He also questions "whether local law enforcement officials should be enforcing federal immigration laws at all," noting that such actions may hinder their ability to serve immigrant communities.
Bill Ong Hing is recognized nationally as an immigration law and community lawyering expert. He is the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco.
