Professor Dodge completes work on Restatement (Fourth) of Foreign Relations Law

Professor William S. Dodge has completed his work on the American Law Institute’s Restatement (Fourth) of Foreign Relations Law, which was published on Oct. 22 and is available on Westlaw. The Restatement (Fourth) updates and replaces the provisions of the 1987 Restatement (Third) on the subjects of treaties, jurisdiction, state immunity, and the enforcement of foreign judgments.

Professor Dodge served for six years as a co-reporter on the topics of jurisdiction and foreign judgments, drafting 10 of the restatement’s sections and substantially revising many of the others. The Restatement (Fourth) already has been relied upon in draft by federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

Professor Dodge is Martin Luther King, Jr. professor of law at UC Davis School of Law. He is an influential international law scholar who served as Counselor on International Law to the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State from 2011 to 2012. Dodge is a co-author of the casebook Transnational Business Problems and a co-editor of International Law in the U.S. Supreme Court: Continuity and Change, which won the American Society of International Law’s 2012 certificate of merit. He has authored more than 50 other publications in books and law reviews.
