Professor Bhagwat to argue for safe spaces in 'Intelligence Squared U.S.' debate
Professor Ashutosh Bhagwat will argue on behalf of safe spaces at universities during an “Intelligence Squared U.S.” debate that will be streamed live at 6:30 p.m. Pacific on Saturday, June 23.
The debate, titled “Trigger Warning: Safe Spaces Are Dangerous,” will consider the argument that safe spaces, in their pursuit of political correctness, hinder the free exchange of ideas.
PEN America CEO Suzanne Nossel and First Amendment scholar David Hudson will argue for the motion that safe spaces are dangerous to free speech. Bhagwat and Wesleyan University President Michael Roth will defend these spaces as necessary for today’s students to be able to thrive in a nonthreatening, non-bigoted environment.
The debate will take place before a live audience in Banff, Alberta, and be streamed live here.
Ashutosh Bhagwat, Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Law at UC Davis School of Law, is an innovative, broad-ranging, and widely published constitutional law scholar.
