Paul M. Smith to Deliver Bill Smith Memorial Lecture

Paul M. Smith of Jenner Block LLP's Washington, D.C. will present the 10th Annual Bill Smith Memorial Lecture on April 15 in the Kalmanovitz Appellate Courtroom.  The event, presented by the UC Davis School of Law Lambda Law Students Association, honors the late Bill F. Smith '98.

Paul Smith has had an active Supreme Court practice for two decades, including oral arguments in 13 Supreme Court cases. His most famous LGBT-focused case is Lawrence v. Texas (2003), involving the constitutionality of the Texas sodomy statute. Paul M. Smith is also actively involved in the Section 3 challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), Gill v. Office of Personnel Management, currently being appealed to the First Circuit Court of Appeals.  He is the American Bar Association's 2010 Thurgood Marshall Award winner and Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for Lambda Legal.

In his brief career as an attorney, Bill Smith championed the rights of the underrepresented in the labor and employment context.  At King Hall, Bill Smith was the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Award winner as well as an active and beloved presence at King Hall.  Now in its tenth year, the event honors Bill Smith's memory by presenting cutting edge issues affecting the LGBT community.
