Cliff Heller, a second-year law student at UC Davis, died on the last weekend of the year, as the result of a skydiving accident in Eloy, Arizona.

"The tragic loss of life of someone with a bright future makes clear the fragility of life. Cliff will be sorely missed," Dean Rex Perschbacher said in an e-mail to the Law School community.

Born in New York, Cliff was raised in Staten Island and received a bachelor of engineering degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Before attending UC Davis School of Law, he worked in the Information Technology division of Credit Suisse First Boston in New York and Singapore.

As an entering law student, Cliff was awarded the Harry M. "Hank" Marsh Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes a first-year student whose academic promise, background, life, and work experiences indicate potential for significant contribution to the School of Law community and the legal profession. He served as senior staff editor of the intellectual property practice area of the UC Davis Business Law Journal. He was a member of the Intellectual Property Association and the Federalist Society.

Cliff was an experienced skydiver, who had trained other skydivers and videotaped customers' tandem jumps at Adventure Center Skydiving in Hollister, Calif., from May 2004 to Aug. 2005.

He is survived by his father, Sherman; mother, Linda; sisters Vicky and Brandice; and brother, Russ. Memorial services were held on January 7, 2007, in Staten Island, NY. Condolences may be sent to Cliff's family at 646 Davis Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10310-3002 or to his sister Victoria Heller by e-mail.

Donations may be made in Cliff's name to the Alzheimers Foundation of Staten Island by phone at 718-667-7110 or by mail to The Alzheimers Foundation of Staten Island, 460 Brielle Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10314-6427.

The Law School administration realizes this tragic accident cannot help but affect all members of the Law School community and is encouraging students to utilize individual and group counseling available to students at the Counseling and Psychological Services on campus.
