Layla M. Razavi '11 Named as EJS Constance Baker Motley Fellow for EJS

Layla M. Razavi '11 has been named as the Equal Justice Society 2011-2012 Judge Constance Baker Motley Civil Rights Fellow.  The fellowship, named after the first African-American woman to serve on the federal bench, is a one-year, paid position in which Razavi will work under the supervision of the EJS Director of Law and Policy and other attorneys at the organization's San Francisco office.

"EJS is one of the few national organizations that is focused on fully realizing the promise of the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution," said Razavi.  "It's an honor to be selected to join the fine legal team at EJS and have the opportunity to work to advance civil rights."   

At King Hall, Razavi is active in both the Public Service Law Program and the Immigration Law Clinic, where she has assisted in filing petitions for habeas relief before the Ninth Circuit and argued a case in federal court, resulting in her client's release from unconstitutional detention. Prior to law school, she was a legislative advocate in Sacramento, promoting equal access to public services for people of color, immigrants, and low-income workers.
