Lambda Law Students Association Honored
The UC Davis Lambda Law Students Association was awarded the 2007 Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALiF) OUTstanding Law Student Organization Award. BALiF is the nation's oldest and largest bar association of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered persons in the field of law. Founded in 1980, BALiF represents its members' interests in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The UC Davis Lambda Law Students Association mission is community, education, and activism. To that end, Lambda sponsors events that raise awareness of LGBT legal issues on campus and in the community.
On April 5, 2007, Lambda hosted the Annual Bill Smith Memorial Lecture. The lecture, “LGBT People in the Military: An International Perspective,” featured Commander Zoe Dunning and Captain Avner Even-Zohar. Commander Dunning is co-chair of the board of directors of the Legal Servicemembers Defense Fund and the only openly gay member of the U.S. Navy Reserves. She spoke on her experiences fighting discharge proceedings and remaining openly gay in the U.S. military. Captain Even-Zohar, a native of Israel, served six years in the Israeli army. He is the Chair of Hebrew Studies in Monterrey, California. He provided an international perspective on military policies that are inclusive of LGBT individuals.
