King Hall Civil Rights Clinic Wins Case in Shasta County
Students in the UC Davis School of Law Civil Rights Clinic, working under the direction of Supervising Attorney Carter “Cappy” White, succeeded in securing a settlement on behalf of a Shasta County inmate who filed suit after being fed unappealing “food loafs” as punishment for disruptive behavior. The victory drew coverage in Redding’s Record Searchlight.
Numerous King Hall students worked on the case over a period of two years, including Andrew Aaronian ’17, Johnathan Baldauf ’15, Rochelle Catuira ’16, Cynthia Cheung ’16, Jeanette Hawn ’15, Katie Kelly ’18, David Ligtenberg ’16, Daisy Liu ’16, Hailey Rogerson ’16, and Sadie Weller ’17.
White told the Searchlight Record the diet amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. Under his supervision, students uncovered evidence that the punishment was retaliation for the prisoner’s having accused sheriff’s officials of recording phone calls between him and his lawyer. The county chose to settle the matter for $30,000.
