First Generation Advocates Returns Under Direction of DEI Fellow Alexis Elston
UC Davis Law’s groundbreaking First Generation Advocates program has returned for the 2021-22 academic year. Now directed by the law school’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fellow, Alexis Elston, the program aims to provide incoming first-generation students with support, guidance and a sense of community as they transition to law school.
First-generation college graduates make up one-fifth of the law school’s Class of 2024. First Generation Advocates connects its 1L participants with faculty and staff mentors, many of whom are themselves first-generation college graduates. Each mentor advises two to four mentees. Participating mentors include Dean Kevin R. Johnson and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Afra Afsharipour.
The program also is offering Academic Success and professional development workshops, discussions with first-generation alumni and judges and mentoring from the First Generation Advocates Student Board.
If you have questions about the First Generation Advocates program, contact Elston or Senior Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Emily Scivoletto.
