Dean Johnson writes amicus brief in support of DACA
Dean Kevin R. Johnson co-authored an amicus brief in State of Texas v. United States and Karla Perez, in support of the defendant-intervenors’ opposition to plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program.
Texas and six other states have challenged the legality of DACA, President Obama’s deferred-action policy to protect some young immigrants from deportation. The injunction sought by Texas conflicts with an injunction granted in California (via Regents of the University of California v. United States Department of Homeland Security) that stays the Trump administration’s rescission of DACA.
Johnson co-wrote the brief, filed in federal court in Texas, with fellow immigration law expert Professor Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia of Penn State Law.
Johnson and Wadhia write in the brief’s summary that “DACA has been a resounding success, providing individuals with longstanding ties to the United States greater opportunities to make valuable contributions to their families and their communities at large.”
Kevin R. Johnson is dean, Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law, and professor of Chicana/o studies. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
