Construction Update: New Building Ready for Winter
The King Hall Expansion and Renovation project progressed rapidly throughout the final months of 2009, as crews worked to finish the new east wing's windows and exterior walls and weatherize the structure before the onset of the rainy season. Construction of the new wing is on schedule for completion in May 2010.
Installation of the windows is mostly complete in the new wing, and the contractor, K.O.O. Construction, is working to install metal panel systems that will cover the spaces between them. Most offices will have operable windows, which will be integrated into a system of thermostats and sensors that will permit the heating and cooling system to adjust for open windows and achieve greater energy efficiency.
The contractor also recently installed windows to enclose the second-floor breezeway in the existing King Hall facility, which ultimately will become part of a set of enclosed walkways surrounding the courtyard. The new walkways will make King Hall easier to navigate, as the courtyard will serve as a near-constant visual reference point, and the increased natural light will improve the building's aesthetics.
Recent weeks have seen the planning of furniture layouts for the new offices, as well as the return of "the eggheads"-Robert Arneson's "See No Evil/Hear No Evil" statues that were removed from the lawn in front of King Hall when construction began. The eggheads have been reinstalled atop small grassy mounds at the center of Mrak Circle in front of King Hall.
As the King Hall Expansion and Renovation project moves forward, the Law School continues to raise private funds toward an $8 million campaign goal. Though the state's portion of the project's funding is in place, the Law School still must raise nearly $3 million to realize the full potential of the renovation phase.
