On March 22, the Center for Innovation, Law, and Society (CILS) and the California International Law Center (CILC) hosted members of the European Parliament for a Transatlantic Tech Exchange Roundtable. The German Marshall Fund and UC Davis School of Law co-sponsored this important event.  While the U.S. and Europe face similar challenges concerning emerging innovations and digital technologies, European legal and policy solutions are often different from those in the United States. The purpose of the dialogue was for UC Davis faculty to present cutting-edge research to facilitate an exchange of ideas about common challenges and potential solutions in this rapidly changing technological environment.

As part of the Transatlantic Tech Exchange Roundtable, UC Davis faculty experts Professors Peter Lee, Stacy-Ann Elvy, Ash Bhagwat, and Lydia de la Torre gave presentations on their current research on artificial intelligence, online content moderation, the Internet of Things, and digital privacy. The four visiting European Parliament members with expertise in technology and privacy then shared their perspectives, raised questions, and offered comments.  The result was a robust and valuable exchange of ideas on current challenges.

The four European Parliament members included Miapetra Kumpula-Natri (Finland), Dragos Tudorache (Romania), Petar Vitanov (Bulgaria), and Zeljana Zovko (Croatia), along with Carla Hustedt (director, Center for Digital Society at the Mercator Foundation).

Astrid Ziebarth and Brooke Tanner represented the German Marshall Fund.

Professor Lee and Associate Dean Beth Greenwood helped coordinate the event and provided opening remarks.
