Life as Dean (2008-24)

This week our Lambda Law Students Association presented the annual Bill Smith lecture with Daniella Carter, a passionate LBGTQ+ advocate. She offered a powerful lecture on life as a trans person in foster care. 

On Saturday, March 16 C-SPAN is airing Professor Mary Ziegler's lecture on abortion and reproductive rights as part of their "Lectures in History" series. It will run at 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Pacific on CSPAN2's American History TV.

This week, the Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies hosted Professor Susy Zepeda of the UC Davis Chicanx Studies Department. She discussed her book Queering Mesoamerican Diasporas (2022). It was a wonderful presentation with a full room of students, faculty, staff, and community members. Professor Zepeda discussed the complexities of identity and the many issues that Chicanx must address. 

This week, the California Environmental Law and Policy Center presented historian Scott Miltenberger to discuss the role of historians in water justice investigations and litigation. Professor Karrigan Börk introduced Dr. Miltenberger, who offered some water law history in a thoughtful way. He made clear the importance of sound historical analysis in water investigations and litigation. 

At the end of last week, the Environmental Law Society held a symposium on Rewilding: The Role of Habitat Restoration and Species Reintroduction Achieving Climate Resiliency.  

The opening keynote was by Kasil Willie, staff attorney with Save California Salmon, who offered an insightful Indigenous perspective on rewilding.

On March 7, UC Davis School of Law gathered at the Mondavi Center to celebrate the achievements of faculty, students, and staff. The celebration drew the King Hall community to recognize 2024 Distinguished Teaching Award recipient Professor Irene Joe, 2024 Outstanding Staff Award recipient Sue Walther Jones and 2024 Special Recognition recipient Maureen Dommer.

I attended the reception honoring the 2024 Chancellor's Fellows, including our own Professor Irene Joe. This is the week of Professor Joe, as she is being honored with the Law School's Distinguished Teaching Award at the Celebrating King Hall gala at the Mondavi Center. 

Over the weekend, King Hall alum Judge Fernando Valle '02 sent me a picture from the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association's 46th Annual Gala. 

It's always great to see a King Hall alum thrive!

Last week, the UC Davis Journal on International Law and Policy (JILP) and the California International Law Center (CILC) held a symposium on Emerging Issues in International Humanitarian Law.

This week King Hall's Latinx Law Students Association (LaLSA) released their new logo! Their Board commissioned artist Peyton Yen (Instagram: @lilpeystudio) to create it.

This week Syracuse University College of Law Professor Bill Wiecek presented his two books on African American civil rights and the U.S. Supreme Court as part of the Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies Seminar Series. He elegantly laid out his approach that sees a dark past and hopeful future. We had a great group of faculty in attendance. 

I had lunch this week with Professor Jack Chin at the Chicago Café in Woodland. The historic nature of the restaurant has been in the news thanks to Professor Chin's research.
