Weekend events address diversity

I was able to participate in several virtual events over the weekend.

On Saturday morning, I participated in the University of California Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (CLAA) Summit. It included a great group of speakers to share their vision for the University of California and the impact on the Latinx community.

We received a welcome from the co-chairs of the CLAA, Lupe Gallegos-Diaz and  Neptaly Taty Aguilera (a UC Davis alum).

The other speakers were:

John A. Pé rez (pictured above), Chair, UC Board of Regents, former Speaker of the California State Assembly
Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz, the new Chancellor at UC Merced
Debby Stegura, UC Alumni Regent, another UC Davis alum
Art Torres, UC Alumni Regent, former member of the California Legislature

I was pleased to be invited to the summit and hear about recent developments concerning Latinx representation in the UC system.

In the afternoon, faculty members, students, judges, and lawyers participated in the 13th Annual Diversity Law Student Reception organized by Judge Shama Mesiwala '98 and the South Asian Bar Association of Sacramento. Judge Mesiwala organized a great group of speakers, who provided advice to the students, including Justice William Murray, U.S. District Judge Morrison England, Justice Elena Duarte, Judge Sonia Cortés , Presiding Judge Russell Hom, Judge Dee Brown, Sacramento County Bar Association President Shanae Buffington , and  2018 SCBA Distinguished Attorney of the Year and Unity Bar Co-founder  Luis Céspedes.

The Diversity Law Student Reception is a wonderful event for students and all who participate. Ordinarily, Judge Mesiwala opens her home for the attendees to network and specifically for students to be able to meet judges and lawyers in a comfortable setting. We are lucky that Judge Mesiwala is so giving to King Hall students and the entire legal community.
